Talking “GOOD” with HOWLive 2017
Our Creative Director, Justin Ahrens, presented at #HOWLive 2017 in Chicago this year. His topic focused on how doing “Good” as a creative or company can not only attract the right people to work for you and with you, but also great clients. Ultimately, having “Good” as part of your internal DNA makes an impact on how you treat your team, your collaborators, your clients, and how you genuinely market yourself. Not to mention it is something to be genuinely proud of. Utilizing authentic goodness (not simply leading with a cause, but truly owning the driving force behind your decision to align with this perspective) is a strong advantage for your business. By speaking of yourself in terms of goodness, you are able to align yourself with consumers and clients who value that goodness.
All that leads to the question: Do you consider yourself a good company? Well, it’s time to start talking about it and we believe you will reap the benefits. Feel free to view the presentation on Slide Share here and get in touch if you represent an organization that values goodness in a creative partner.
Seeing Different with the Tom Tom Founders Festival
Rule29 had the privilege of being a keynote and talking about founding Rule29 and how we strive “To See Different” at the Tom Tom Fest in Charlottesville, Virginia. Additionally, our creative director Justin Ahrens talked about the world water crisis through the lens of Wheels4Water and with other organizations MadiDrop and Waterboys started by NFL star Kyle Long. The Tom Tom Fest celebrates and empowers the founders of creative, civic, and entrepreneurial projects. The signature project of the Foundation is the Tom Tom Founders Festival, which occurs each April over Thomas Jefferson’s birthday week (April 13), as Charlottesville’s historic downtown is reimagined as a creative canvas.
Like the founding polymath, the Founders Festival explores diverse disciplines – society, education, energy, food, and technology — and links the rich history of the City with an exploration into the future. Ultimately, the festival seeks to leave lasting legacies of creativity throughout Charlottesville through public art and business formation.
Rule29 Creates One of Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas
World Changing Ideas is one of Fast Company’s major annual awards programs and is focused on social good, seeking to elevate finished products and brave concepts that make the world better. A panel of judges from across sectors choose winners and finalists based on feasibility and the potential for impact. With a goal of awarding ingenuity and fostering innovation, Fast Company draws attention to ideas with great potential and helps them expand their reach to inspire more people to start work on solving the problems that affect us all.
Rule29’s design for good event Wheels4Water is one of the projects that was picked from over 1,200 entries. “Fast Company has always insisted that being a force for good has to be a key element for any business,” says Fast Company editor and managing director Robert Safian. “These World Changing Idea award winners show how organizations around the world are embracing the ideals of creativity and innovation to create enormous impact.” Rule29 is thankful to be one of the inaugural world changing idea finalists! #WCIAwards

Season 2 of #DesignOfPodcast ends with the amazing Josh Higgins
We end season 2 of our podcast with the amazing Josh Higgins who got his start as a punk rock surfer from Southern California. Following a chance encounter with graphic design at a young age, Josh went on to design iconic posters for the 2008 Obama campaign, leading community design projects to raise funding for the Haiti earthquake and SoCal fires, and eventually became a Creative Director at Facebook. Justin and Wills traveled to Facebook HQ in Silicon Valley, to learn more about how Josh and his team are working to connect the world.
R29 Throws It Back for Christmas 2016
To say Christmas is a favorite holiday at Rule29 would be an understatement. Christmas is the ONLY holiday to us.
When it came time to create our annual Christmas card to round out 2016, we knew that we wanted to make it big and bold…like 1990’s big and bold.
Enter: The Rule29 Holiday Giftbook
Here we brought together a glorious set of products that will inspire smiles and joy during the holiday season. From practical gadgets to fashion-forward wearables, our goal was to make gift giving easy and enjoyable (and hilariously awesome). All of this was paired with a 1990’s JC Penny’s Christmas aesthetic and presented in the style of a cheap mail-order catalogue.
We hoped this tongue-in-cheek holiday card would bring much laughter and add to the hilarity and joy of the season. If you didn’t receive a copy in the mail, you can always download from r29holidaygiftbook.com

#SXSL 2016 – A Trip to the White House
In 2016, President Obama traveled to South by Southwest® for a conversation on civic engagement. In Austin, he called on creative thinkers and entrepreneurs from across the country to help tackle our toughest challenges. On Monday, October 3, we were selected from over 20,000 entrants to take part of this inaugural event that celebrated that spirit of innovation at South by South Lawn, a White House festival of ideas, art, and action. At SXSL, we explored the inspiring work that so many Americans have already accomplished, shared the work Rule29 has done to try to make the world a better place and watched as the President called on everyone to roll up their sleeves and discover their own way to make a positive difference in our country. See some pictures from the event here!
