Season 2 of #DesignOfPodcast ends with the amazing Josh Higgins
We end season 2 of our podcast with the amazing Josh Higgins who got his start as a punk rock surfer from Southern California. Following a chance encounter with graphic design at a young age, Josh went on to design iconic posters for the 2008 Obama campaign, leading community design projects to raise funding for the Haiti earthquake and SoCal fires, and eventually became a Creative Director at Facebook. Justin and Wills traveled to Facebook HQ in Silicon Valley, to learn more about how Josh and his team are working to connect the world.
R29 Throws It Back for Christmas 2016
To say Christmas is a favorite holiday at Rule29 would be an understatement. Christmas is the ONLY holiday to us.
When it came time to create our annual Christmas card to round out 2016, we knew that we wanted to make it big and bold…like 1990’s big and bold.
Enter: The Rule29 Holiday Giftbook
Here we brought together a glorious set of products that will inspire smiles and joy during the holiday season. From practical gadgets to fashion-forward wearables, our goal was to make gift giving easy and enjoyable (and hilariously awesome). All of this was paired with a 1990’s JC Penny’s Christmas aesthetic and presented in the style of a cheap mail-order catalogue.

#SXSL 2016 – A Trip to the White House
In 2016, President Obama traveled to South by Southwest® for a conversation on civic engagement. In Austin, he called on creative thinkers and entrepreneurs from across the country to help tackle our toughest challenges. On Monday, October 3, we were selected from over 20,000 entrants to take part of this inaugural event that celebrated that spirit of innovation at South by South Lawn, a White House festival of ideas, art, and action. At SXSL, we explored the inspiring work that so many Americans have already accomplished, shared the work Rule29 has done to try to make the world a better place and watched as the President called on everyone to roll up their sleeves and discover their own way to make a positive difference in our country. Rule29 Recognized as a Top Creative Agency in Chicago
We are excited to announce that recently Rule29 was among the top in a competitive evaluation of creative agencies in Chicago by the B2B research firm Clutch.
Clutch’s algorithm takes a number of factors into account when determining a company’s position in its research. These include a company’s demonstrated work, client base, and their ability to deliver on past projects as determined by their clients. This is where Clutch’s methodology stands out. Clutch analyst spoke with three of our past clients, and created case-study style reviews of each of the projects.
While we’re proud to be featured so highly on Clutch’s list, what we’re more proud of is the positive feedback we received from our clients. #ColorOf: An Experiment in Human Interaction and Color
We’ve always been plagued by the question, “How is the world seeing right now?” To answer that question, we’ve developed a little internal passion project called #ColorOf. Whatever hashtag, whether #wonder or #taco, you can now see the colors people are using to express those moments. #ColorOf grabs in real time the predominant colors of the latest Instagram posts associated with the hashtags you choose to render. It then creates an image displaying an assortment of those colors. With the constant stream of new posts, watch how colors and moods change. Customize and tweak images with various settings! Justin Ahrens joins AIGA National Board
Rule29’s Principle and Creative Director, Justin Ahrens, has been nominated to the 2016 AIGA National Board! In this role, Justin will be on the leadership team of the largest professional design association in the country, and speaking into the global design conversation. We’re obviously proud of Justin around here, and look forward to seeing his impact on AIGA.

Rule29 at #HOWLive 2016
Our Creative Director, Justin Ahrens, spoke at HOW Design Live in Atlanta this May. Justin’s talk was titled “Branding Passion: How to create a compelling campaign or project for social change.”
It focused on how design can be used to create positive social change. Creatives have the ability to shift perspective and to create impact. But making this impact can’t only happen with passion – there needs to be a strategic and defined process to carry the concept to real successful outcomes while not overwhelming you.
In his session, Justin went through the Rule29 approach and how projects like Wheels4Water has helped bring safe water to thousands of people in Uganda. The end goal was to provide tips on how to do your own event and see how doing these types of projects can change you, your company and how YOU see the world. Would you like a closer look?
